What happens when a person changes the country but cannot change the inner reality? What does an emigrant take with him, besides suitcases? What voices continue to sound in the head, even after years?

 

"Poplar Fluff" is a novel about the wave of Jewish emigration in the 1990s - about the intelligentsia who left the country after the collapse of the Soviet Union and ended up in the United States, in a boarding house for those who had left. It is a precise, ironic and piercing reflection on any move associated with loss, adaptation and an attempt to preserve oneself.

 

The novel's heroes are people who once left, but never let go of the past. They built their former lives anew - in another country, but according to the same patterns. With all the fears, habits, silence, for which it is so difficult to forgive both yourself and others.

 

This is a story about internal emigration, about guilt, about memory and love.
About how difficult it is, but necessary, to change not geography, but yourself.
About how we all live at the intersection of cultures, traumas and hopes.
And how contact is possible at these intersections.
